The Whitfield Heritage Arms
This traditional Whitfield coat of arms features a bold red shield crossed by a silver fess and surrounded by six silver crosses crosslet fitchée. A knight’s helmet and sweeping red-and-silver mantling complete the design, giving it the commanding appearance of a crest carried through generations.
The deeper Whitfield story reaches back to Whitfield Hall in Northumberland, England. In 1167, William the Lion, King of Scots, confirmed a grant of land at Whitfield to Robert, chaplain and steward to Countess Ada. Robert adopted the name Robert de Whitfield, beginning the family’s association with the estate—an association that continued for nearly six centuries before the property was sold in 1750.
For our family, the American chapter continues through William Whitfield I and his son, William Whitfield II. William I helped establish the family’s early roots in North Carolina. William II, born in 1715 and married to Rachel Bryan, became a militia captain, public official, representative for Dobbs County, and member of North Carolina’s Council of State during the Revolutionary era.
More than a coat of arms, this design honors the Whitfield name’s journey from Northumberland to America and the generations who carried its history forward. It represents ancestry, perseverance, service, and the responsibility of building a legacy worthy of those who came before us.
